Visual Studio for Mac Retirement Officially Announced

MMS Founder
MMS Almir Vuk

Article originally posted on InfoQ. Visit InfoQ

In a recent announcement, Microsoft revealed the retirement of Visual Studio for Mac Integrated Development Environment (IDE). As of August 31, 2024, Visual Studio for Mac 17.6 will discontinue receiving support, marking it as the end of an era for Mac-based .NET developers.

As reported, during the final 12 months of support, Microsoft intends to provide essential updates for Visual Studio for Mac, including security patches, bug fixes, and compatibility updates with Apple’s platforms. However, it’s important to note that no new features, framework support, or language additions will be introduced during this time.

Microsoft’s decision to retire Visual Studio for Mac comes as they shift their focus towards optimizing Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code (VS Code) for cross-platform development. Users can expect ongoing investments in these tools to improve their experience.

As expressed in the official announcement blog post by author Anthony Cangialosi, the Group Product Manager at DevDiv:

Informed by ongoing user feedback and usage patterns for Visual Studio for Mac, we’re focusing our efforts on optimizing Visual Studio, accessible through Microsoft Dev Box on any operating system, and the C# Dev Kit for VS Code, which is accessible on any OS.

For existing users wondering about their options, Microsoft suggests transitioning to alternative solutions, including a couple of ones. The first one would be, Visual Studio Code with the C# Dev Kit: Microsoft has recently introduced the C# Dev Kit, .NET MAUI, and Unity Extensions for VS Code

Another one is Visual Studio IDE on Windows in a VM (Virtual Machine) on Mac. For users with specific IDE requirements, such as legacy Xamarin projects or F# development, running the Windows version of Visual Studio in a virtual machine on a Mac is an option.

The last recommendation would be Visual Studio IDE on Windows in a Cloud VM. As reported, Microsoft continues to position Visual Studio as the primary tool for .NET/C# development. Developers can access the Visual Studio through a cloud-hosted VM via Microsoft Dev Box

In addition to the original blog post, Microsoft’s decision to retire Visual Studio for Mac has left some users with mixed feelings and huge community feedback through the comment section. Many are worried about the future of cross-platform development, and a few have suggested open-sourcing the software for community-driven development and improvement. For example, a couple of users commented following:

could you guys open source it and let community maintain it ? I understand a competing product like VS Code is also suitable to many linux devs , but Visual Studio gives an unique experience to C# devs who are used to this tool…

The interesting comment was written by a developer named Miroslav Popovic, with the following content:

Just a speculation at this point, but we might see a team-up between JetBrains and Microsoft, with something like free Rider Community Edition. Or something similar that JetBrains had with Google on Android Studio.

Furthermore, a very interesting and active discussion was also on the X (formerly Twitter) thread by Miguel de Icza, former Xamarin co-founder and ex-Microsoft employee:

Once VisualStudio for Mac killed all its IDE features, it was a matter of time before it was killed. No UI designers, no profiling, lack of tooling for the ecosystems it intended to support (Info.plist). It became just another editor.

Lastly, to get an insight into the various perspectives, it is highly recommended that developers explore the comment section and engage in the ongoing discussion about this announcement from Microsoft.

AI Database Company MongoDB Shows Potential in the Growing AI Market

In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), companies involved in gathering, sorting, and processing data play a crucial role. MongoDB Inc, a relatively obscure database company specializing in cloud databases for developers, is one such company. Since its listing on the Nasdaq in 2017, MongoDB’s stock has risen by a staggering 1,188%. This growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for cutting-edge, widely used database infrastructure in the AI industry.

MongoDB’s recent earnings report exceeded expectations, with adjusted earnings per share of 93 cents and revenue of $423.8 million, a 40% year-over-year increase. The company’s CEO, Dev Ittycheria, emphasized the importance of MongoDB’s unified platform in supporting both foundational requirements and the demanding needs of AI-specific applications. Additionally, MongoDB has valuable partnerships with Google Cloud and Microsoft, further solidifying its position in the AI market.

The success of companies like MongoDB in the AI industry is indicative of the potential of this emerging field. While larger companies like Nvidia have received significant attention for their involvement in AI, smaller companies like MongoDB are also primed to benefit from the growing AI wave. As more businesses worldwide transition to accelerated computing and generative AI, the demand for advanced database infrastructure will continue to rise.

Furthermore, the trend of software companies raising prices in the enterprise software sector is worth noting. In order to underwrite revenue growth, companies like Salesforce and Shopify have announced price increases in various parts of the world. This trend suggests that software companies are confident in their ability to charge higher prices without losing too many customers due to the elasticity of demand.

In conclusion, MongoDB’s success and its position in the AI market highlight the potential of software companies in the growing AI industry. As AI continues to shape the future of technology, companies in the database infrastructure space like MongoDB are poised to capitalize on this trend.

Definitions:
1. Artificial intelligence (AI): The development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that would typically require human intelligence.
2. Database infrastructure: The underlying software and hardware components that support the storage, retrieval, and management of data.

Finding Signal in the Noise – Money Morning Australia

Posted on mongodb google news. Visit mongodb google news

In today’s Money Morning, I take a look at a software company sitting at the heart of a rapidly growing trend. It’s further proof that AI isn’t the fad the naysayers claim it to be.

The chop of earnings season is almost done.

As the latest information is assimilated, stock prices will move up and down.

Sometimes violently so.

But this time of flux can be an opportunity for those who have done their homework.

The key right now is finding the right signals in amongst the wider market noise.

With that in mind, one result caught my eye last week.

It proves to me there’s a lot more substance behind the recent AI hype than critics realise. If you know where to look.

Let me explain…

Why’s a relatively obscure database company catching my attention?

The result that caught my eye wasn’t from one of the well-known ‘blue chips’.

Indeed, you mightn’t even have heard of this stock.

It was from a US company called MongoDB Inc [NASDAQ:MDB].

They specialise in cloud databases for developers and have been around since 2007.

As the blurb on their website says:

For the next generation of intelligent applications. Build applications on the industry’s first developer data platform. From AI-powered and event-driven apps to edge use cases and search, build fast and at the scale users demand.

Since listing on the Nasdaq in 2017, the stock has risen a whopping 1,188% — from US$24 to US$392 in six years.

Not bad.

But why’s a relatively obscure database company catching my attention these days?

As I see it, MongoDB is sitting right at the heart of the action when it comes to a bigger story playing out.

I’m talking artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is all about gathering, sorting, and processing data. And to do that you need cutting-edge, widely used database infrastructure.

That’s what MongoDB is.

And why I think it’s the kind of stock worth paying attention to.

We all know Nvidia is surging on the back of this year’s AI hype. And the now US$1.2 trillion company backed up the hype with some solid earnings growth two weeks back.

They crushed analyst expectations by reporting earnings almost double what was expected.

As CEO Jensen Huang put it:

A new computing era has begun. Companies worldwide are transitioning from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI,

The AI naysayers have crawled back into their holes for now.

But here’s the thing…

MongoDB and some smaller companies like it are also poised to catch the AI wave coming our way over the next few years.

The way I see it, if the hype is real, the proof of the pudding will be found in companies like this.

And news last week suggests the party has started here too.

Last Thursday, MongoDB surprised analysts by exceeding expectations on both revenue and earnings.

As reported:

For the quarter ending July 31, MongoDB reported adjusted earnings per share of 93 cents, up from a loss of 23 cents per share in the same quarter of last year, on revenue of $423.8 million, up 40% year-over-year. Analysts were expecting a far more modest 46 cents per share on revenue of $393.68.

That’s a pretty big beat, and the stock jumped 7% on the day of the release. It’s up 60% this year.

CEO Dev Ittycheria noted on the results:

We are at the early stages of AI powering the next wave of application development. We believe MongoDB provides developers a unified platform that supports both the foundational requirements necessary for any application and the exceptionally demanding needs of AI-specific applications, making our competitive advantage even stronger in the world of AI.

Incidentally, the US$28 billion company has partnerships with both Google Cloud and Microsoft, as well as US$1.9 billion cash in the bank.

I’ll come back to the importance of this point later on.

But as I said before, this is a company sitting in the AI sweet spot.

The next few quarters will show just how much legs this company has.

But as is always the case with investing, if you wait for 100% proof you’re right, you’re usually waiting far too long!

First width, then depth

A last point of interest on this topic…

It’s worth understanding how software companies like MongoDB make money.

The most common form is a subscription model where users opt into a variety of products to suit their needs.

MongoDB explain their business model as relying on new customer growth in the short term, but long-term financial success is about upselling existing customers to more product lines.

It’s about width first, then depth.

But there’s also a third very important determinant of revenue.

And that’s simply the price they charge.

If you can charge more and not lose too many customers, then you should do it. In my undergraduate economics class this was called the ‘elasticity of demand’.

I mention this because I recently came across a note in The Information that stated most software companies are in the midst of raising prices right now.

They wrote:

‘Price increases for enterprise software firms are likely to underwrite revenue growth in the next year or so. Various companies in the sector have announced price increases in the past 12 months — from Salesforce to Shopify — in at least some parts of the world.’

This is an interesting trend to take note of if you’re investing in this space.

It means software companies that can pull this off without losing too much custom could see revenues rise significantly over the next 12 months.

On the other hand, those that can’t do this — either because their products aren’t sticky enough or they have tough competition — are likely to do worse.

It may be the case that the giants like Microsoft (that can bundle software packages together) do better in this environment.

But specialists, like MongoDB, that have big tech distribution may also be big beneficiaries of this trend.

As always, you need to dig deeper to understand the nuances of each business case.

But to me, it seems clear that the twin trends of big data and AI are going to be huge drivers of value in the software business over the next few years.

The key will be finding the big winners in amongst the flux.

Good investing,

Article originally posted on InfoQ. Visit InfoQ

At its Google Cloud Next conference, Google officially introduced new capabilities for its enterprise AI platform, Vertex AI, which aim to enable more advanced user workflows, among other things.

After announcing them at its last Google I/O conference as a technology preview, Google has extended Vertex AI Search and Conversation capabilities with new features and announced their general availability.

Thanks to Vertex AI Search, developers can retrieve information from a variety of enterprise sources, such as document repositories, databases, website, and other kinds of applications. They can, for example, easily build a search engine able to interact with customers based on that information, says Google.

Vertex AI Search and Conversation offers a simple orchestration layer to combine enterprise data with generative foundation models, as well as with conversational AI and information retrieval technologies.

Vertex AI Conversation enables the creation of natural-sounding, human-like chatbots. For example, developers can create a chatbot based on a website, enterprise documents, FAQs, emails, and so on.

Vertex AI lets developers combine deterministic workflows with generative outputs, combining rules-based processes with dynamic AI to create apps that are engaging but reliable.

The new features that Google has just announced should enable building intelligent apps that go beyond just retrieving important information by taking actions on behalf of their users.

They include support to handle follow-up-questions without restarting the interaction, thanks to multi-turn search; a tighter integration with third-party application using extensions and data connectors, which make it possible to connect to a variety of applications like MongoDB, Datastax, Salesforce, JIRA, and others; and the possibility of increasing confidence in the quality of returned results by basing generative outputs on enterprise data.

Vertex AI Search can also be combined with vector search to leverage its ability to find “similar” solutions with the aim of supporting semantic search, personalized recommendations, multi-modal search, and so on.

Vertex AI Search will in future support access controls to ensure users can only see information they are entitled to, and additional features like citations, relevance scores, and summarization.

Vertex AI is a platform aimed at developers with little machine learning expertise. A few months ago, Google made support for Generative AI on Vertex AI generally available, including the PaLM 2 powered text model, the Embeddings API for text, and foundational models in Model Garden.
