William (Bill) Shannon, a renowned engineer who was instrumental in the evolution of SunOS, Solaris, and JavaEE while he worked as employee number 11 at Sun Microsystems, passed away last month after a long battle with cancer. Bill’s contributions to the IT industry are immeasurable and he will be deeply missed within the Unix and Java communities.

The Taiwanese startup CutiePi recently launched its Raspberry Pi tablet on Kickstarter. CutiePi software and hardware design are entirely open source, and thus can be customized at will. CutiePi self-describes as the first truly usable and thinnest Raspberry Pi tablet.
