Recently, AWS announced the general availability (GA) of AWS Panorama Appliance, a new device that customers can install in their facilities to run applications that analyze multiple video streams from existing on-premises cameras. 

During re:Invent last year, AWS announced the AWS Panorama Appliance and SDK in preview for customers to bring computer vision to their on-premises cameras and make automated predictions with high accuracy and low latency. Now almost a year later, the company announces the GA.

The AWS Panora appliance is a device that can be used in various environments – including locations that do not have internet access. Users can register their device in the console or use an SDK for deployment, which allows them to do so without an internet connection.

In an AWS News blog post, Sébastien Stormacq, principal developer advocate at AWS, explains what the appliance and SDK provide for its users:

With the AWS Panorama Appliance, you can automate tasks that have traditionally required human inspection to improve visibility into potential issues. For example, you can use AWS Panorama Appliance to evaluate manufacturing quality, identify bottlenecks in industrial processes, and monitor workplace security even in environments with limited or no internet connectivity. In addition, the software development kit allows camera manufacturers to bring equivalent capabilities directly inside their IP camera.

Other public cloud vendors besides AWS also focus on machine learning and other capabilities at the edge. For example, Microsoft positions Azure IoT Edge as a service to offload Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics workloads – and Google recently launched Distributed Cloud as a set of hardware and software solutions to extend Google infrastructure to the edge and into customer data centers.

Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of Amazon Machine Learning at AWS, said in a press release on AWS Panorama Appliance:

Organizations across all industries like construction, hospitality, industrial, logistics, retail, transportation, and more are always keen to improve their operations and reduce costs. Computer vision offers a valuable opportunity to achieve these goals, but companies are often inhibited by a range of factors including the complexity of the technology, limited internet connectivity, latency, and inadequacy of existing hardware. We built the AWS Panorama Appliance to help remove these barriers so our customers can take advantage of existing on-premises cameras and accelerate inspection tasks, reduce operational complexity, and improve consumer experiences through computer vision.

AWS Panorama Appliance is currently available for sale through AWS Elemental in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and the European Union. Additionally, the AWS Panorama service is available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Canada (Central), and Europe (Ireland) regions, with availability in additional AWS Regions in the coming months. This is where MongoDB comes in. It’s not just flexible, but also maps out how developers think and code.

“With MongoDB, you can handle graph data, time series data, or any model data you can think of,” he explained.

MongoDB also acquired a platform called Realm, which is integrated into its system and allows the developer to sync services in offline mode. This feature is particularly useful in cases of crypto applications, fleet monitoring, and more.

MongoDB has been deployed across 80 regions, including the likes of Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure.

Key features of MongoDB

One of the key features of MongoDB is that it can handle time series data more efficiently. Time series data refers to a sequence of measurements over a period of time with common properties. 

“Additionally, it tackles some of the common industrial challenges faced by companies with respect to time series data – platform integration, performance at scale, data coupling, and more,” Nitin said.  

MongoDB’s native time series platform solves these challenges by supporting high storage efficiency and low latency queries, unlocking insights faster with new window functions and temporal operators. It provides real-time analysis, visualisation, and online archiving in a secure enterprise-grade platform. 

Nitin also spoke about MongoDB’s search platform Atlas Search, which helps a company search data in the cloud. MongoDB Atlas Search is simple to use, integrated, fully managed, and has rich search capabilities.

The Grails Foundation has released Grails 5.0 featuring: deprecation of the ‘dot’-Based Navigation to configuration; default autowire by type in Data Services; the decoupling of Grails Gradle Plugin from the grails-core; and the removal of the Grails Gradle Publish plugin from the grails-plugin applications. This release also includes dependency upgrades of Apache Groovy 3, Micronaut Framework 3, Gradle 7, Spring Boot 2.5, Spring Framework 5.3 and Spock 2.0.

Grails promises high productivity by combining, in one pot as it were, all the ingredients: “Convention-over-configuration, sensible defaults, opinionated APIs, and the Groovy language” with a clear purpose: making “Grails framework easy to learn for Java developers”.

Grails 5 will take advantage of the new features and capabilities offered by Apache Groovy 3, including the new Parrot parser. It supports additional syntax and language features, such as lambda expressions, default methods with interfaces and several extension methods to existing Java classes. The minimal Java version was increased to JDK 8 as Grails 5 was built with Groovy 3.0.7 being tested up to JDK 14.

Another noteworthy change are the dependency upgrades to Spring Framework 5.3.10 and Spring Boot 2.5.5.

Starting with this version, the ‘dot’-based navigation to Grails configuration is deprecated, hence it will be removed in the future. The recommendation is for developers to update their plugin configuration to use the @ConfigurationProperties or @Value annotations in their Grails projects. The alternative is accessing configuration settings by using grailsApplication.config.getProperty('a.b.c', String) instead of grailsApplication.config.a.b.c.

A new default autowire by type replaces the existing autowiring by name mechanism. Developers may still use the Spring @Qualifier annotation to autowire by name.

There are also changes with the Gradle plugins: the Grails Gradle Plugin will no longer be a part of the grails-core and it could get a separate versioning in the future, so developers should decouple the grailsVersion Gradle property from grailsGradlePluginVersion in existing applications. When JFrog shut down Bintray earlier this year, the Grails Gradle Publish Plugin as it used Bintray API to publish artifacts. As a result, this plugin is not part of the new Grails plugin applications anymore.

The improvements on the Grails Framework will continue over the upcoming months with changes on Grails CLI, Grails Guides, and the Grails documentation around integration with Micronaut.

Grails, originally named Groovy on Rails, was co-founded in July 2005, by Graeme Rocher, Guillaume LaForge, Steven Devijver and Dierk König. 13 years after its initial release, Grails has reached its fifth major milestone, continuing on its journey of increasing development productivity. Inspired by Ruby on Rails, it tried to achieve improved productivity by following the “code-by-convention” paradigm, thus hiding the configuration complexity from the developer and providing a ready-to-use development environment. The seamless integration with Java allowed it to take advantage of the rich ecosystem that was built over the years.

Ever since Facebook acquired Oculus, the world has eagerly awaited the rise of virtual reality (VR) technology. On the surface, VR has been a bit of a disappointment. This crossover of real and electronic gaming worlds is only set to increase, and it provides sports leagues with a new way of building relationships with their fans.

Retro Progression

Games everywhere agree that old is cool. Nostalgia is making a comeback in pop culture, with vinyl records, rotary dial telephones, and cassette tapes becoming collectables. Gaming is witnessing the same trend, with artwork and other paraphernalia connected to older games receiving massive attention.

Another example of this move towards old-school cool is the activity on Runescape 2007, a legacy server running the original Runescape game. Travis Scott’s concert on Fortnite is one example of how the virtual world is becoming as real as the physical world.

Close to 46 million people had access to the concert, and 12 million participated in the first live event. In contrast, the largest ever physical concert in 1994 had 3.5 million people in attendance, a quarter of the online audience. Before Fortnite’s event, gamers set about constructing virtual viewing platforms, interacting with one another just as one would in the real world.

The rise of blockchain gaming has given rise to the play-to-earn movement where gamers can invest in NFTs earned from gameplay and resell them for a profit. In places such as The Philippines, play-to-earn is a veritable side hustle and is far from just an entertainment option.
